Transition to Sweet Ascension of Congolese Patriarch
Thomas Boukaka aka Ma Boukakasunset:March 21, 2010 [east palo, ca]

Picture
Ma Boukaka is from the Congo, Central Africa a village area known today as "Brazzaville.  His exploration of drums begin by tapping out rhythms with his friends at play. At 14 he left the village to work as a cook and eventually became a pisteur (guide, hunter and cook) for a French safari company in Northern Congo and Gabon. In 1959 he came to the San Francisco Bay Area a year before Congo's Independence and worked as a cook - It was in 1977, together with  Ta Malonga Casquelourd, that he formed "Fua Dia Congo" Heritage of the Congo and the Congolese Dance Company of the Bay Area. Since that time, Ma Boukaka has performed in many shows produced by the Congolese Artistic Community. These shows reflect the culture and heritage of Congolese village life, a culture deeply rooted in family and community. Since 1982 he has also participated in the annual Congolese Dance and Drum Workshop in Nevada City, California.
Ma Boukaka taught Congolese drum class every Tuesday in Menlo Park California since 1982, using the traditional Congolese method - whereby he demonstrates a part for you, makes sure you have it, then lets you explore while he continues to play the rhythm with full encouragement; He also taught the call-response song for each rhythm and each of the parts; Ma Boukaka promoted the sense that,  drumming is as much a part of life as breathing...His legacy continues to live within all touched by Congolese Dance and Drum Culture in the United States! ~Matondo Ma Boukaka [we will keep "the line" movin'] *content courtesy of: www.congolesecamp.org| www.btainc.com/boukaka.htm| edited by: R. Congolese Master Drummer and Camp founder transitioned

"...Mbemba Pangou was a founding Board member and instructor for the Congolese Dance & Drum Workshop for close to 30 years who unselfishly shared his time, talents and heart with thousands of students. More than a gifted musician, recording artist, dancer, actor and teacher, he was a source of quiet but unwavering strength and dedication to preserving and sharing Congolese cultural art forms. For those who knew him personally, he was a warm and caring individual who never failed at being there to support the ones he loved"
